One of the best things about Christianity is the peace and hope that it brings. John says; I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life. – I John 5:13 Now some people will say it’s arrogant to think that you know for sure you are going to spend eternity in heaven with God, but lets really look at why we are able to claim this as Christians. Now it would be an arrogant claim if we claimed that Salvation was earned by doing good deeds or by living a moral life, but we understand Ephesians 2:8-9 is true, where Paul says; For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. So what does this look like then, God’s grace look like Jesus Christ nailed to a tree taking the punishment that you and I deserve. In Romans Paul uses language like “heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ” this is all language that speaks of a grafting into a family tree like adoption. Spurgeon said it like this; “by the act of adoption we are children; if children then heirs; if heirs, heirs of God; but since there is another heir, we must therefore be joint heirs with Christ Jesus.” So I have assurance in my salvation because I know that if I were to stand before the Creator of the universe, God Almighty today and He asked me why He should let me in to heaven, I would simply point to Jesus and say because of Him. I wouldn’t stand there and have to explain how I had really lived a pretty moral life and remind Him I have never murdered anyone, nor would I try to prove to Him how my good outweighed my bad. No I will simply point to my Savior, Jesus Christ my advocate the one who stands on Heaven interceding for me, the God-man who lived a perfect life, died a substitutionary death and then rose again defeating, Satan, Sin and Death. You see my assurance isn’t “MY” assurance at all, it is His.
So remember as Christians who by God’s grace have put our faith in Jesus Christ, God’s love for us is not based on what we do or do not do, it is based on what Jesus Christ did!
